Meet Our Master Arborists: Our Tree Whisperers at Your Service!
Reading time: 4 minutesEver gazed out your window, marvelling at a towering, robust tree at your neighbour’s and pondered, "How can my tree become so majestic?" Wonder no more! At Green Drop, our team of superstar arborists are not just good with trees—they’re like tree magicians, ready to answer all your leafy curiosities. But first…
Who is a Master Arborist?
Offered by The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist® is the highest level of certification or credential an arborist can receive. It acknowledges ISA Certified Arborists® who have attained the highest echelon of expertise in their field.
To qualify, candidates must undergo an extensive scenario-based examination and adhere to a stringent Code of Ethics. Less than two percent of all ISA Certified Arborists® hold this esteemed certification.
Today, we're rolling out the green carpet for two of our resident Master Arborists, Nicholas Stewart and Mike Leung, who make sure your trees are not just growing but thriving.
Nicholas Stewart: Our Urban Forest Master
With over 15 years under his belt, Nick is a seasoned pro when it comes to our urban forests. His passion lies in keeping Winnipeg's leafy lungs thriving for generations to come. He’s a true tree whisperer, ensuring our urban canopy stays strong and beautiful.
Nicholas is a certified arborist with all the fancy acronyms to prove it (ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, anyone?) He is also an ISA-certified arborist, municipal specialist, and tree risk assessment specialist. Plus, he has an MB arborist license and an IPM pesticide applicator license as well. Nicholas has also received aerial rescue and advanced climbing training from ArborCanada.
This means he has the knowledge and experience to tackle any tree challenge, from tricky tree assessments and diagnoses to strategic pruning and removal. He's also a whiz at keeping soil healthy and fertilized, managing pesky pests and diseases, and even cabling and bracing trees that need a little extra support.
At Green Drop, Nicholas is a cherished manager. He assists municipalities, universities, engineers, developers, and non-profit organizations throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan and always prioritizes client satisfaction. He works with his team to develop and implement community forestry projects, such as urban tree risk assessments, tree inventories, and tree preservation plans.
Nicholas works closely with everyone involved to ensure our trees get the TLC they deserve and our urban forest continues to thrive.
Mike Leung: Our Resident Sherlock Holmes for Trees
Mike brings a whole new meaning to being a tree specialist. He’s a seasoned tree arborist with over 16 years of arboriculture experience, a Post-graduate Certificate in Arboriculture, and a B.Sc. in Environmental Science. Talk about a walking encyclopedia of tree knowledge!
Mike is an ISA-certified master arborist with a focus on tree risk assessment. He’s a municipal specialist and recognized tree risk assessor. He's also a specialist at keeping sneaky tree invaders at bay with his pest and disease management expertise.
As a true innovator, Mike founded a specialized plant disease laboratory in Hong Kong in 2011. This pioneering lab teamed up with university scientists to create cutting-edge PCR techniques to find the diseases harming plants. Mike’s work there has been recognized and trusted by the government, leading to several collaborations involving vital field trials.
Think of him as a plant Sherlock Holmes, using cutting-edge tech to diagnose tree ailments. He continues to aim for and achieve excellence in the arboriculture space. In 2022, Mike brought his impressive plant detective skills to Green Drop, setting up a brand new diagnostic lab here! He's been leading the fight against Dutch Elm Disease (DED) using the latest technology and the Australian National Diagnostic Protocol in our lab.
Mike's passion for trees goes beyond the practical. He's a published author and academic with numerous publications highlighting his knowledge of pest and disease management and tree risk assessment. He's a consummate professional and served on the board of directors for the ISA Hong Kong Chapter, where he was also president from 2018 to 2020. Now, that's some serious tree arborist cred.
So, if your trees are looking a little under the weather, Mike's the arborist to get to the root of the problem.
There you have it! Nicholas and Mike are just two of the many talented arborists at Green Drop. With their expertise and dedication, you can rest assured your trees are in good hands.
